India lost a home Test series after 4331 days
Following the conclusion of the second Test, Rohit Sharma admitted during the post-match presentation that his team didn’t batted well enough to put sufficient runs on the board.
After losing the toss and being asked to bowl first, India struggled with bat and made just 156 runs in response to New Zealand’s 259 in the 1st innings. With a lead of 103 runs, New Zealand then scored 255 runs in their second innings and managed to bowl India out for 245 on Day 3.
In the post-match presentation, Rohit mentioned that the team didn’t bat well enough. He also stated that the pitch wasn’t particularly challenging, but the batters should have performed better.
“Didn’t think we batted well enough to get runs on the board. You’ve got to pick 20 wickets to win, yes, but batters have to put runs on the board. Wasn’t a pitch where a lot was happening. We just didn’t bat well enough,” Rohit said.
India’s loss in the second Test against New Zealand in Pune has ended their impressive streak of home series wins that lasted for 4,331 days, with their last loss at home occurring in 2012 against England. New Zealand outplayed India throughout the series, winning the first Test by 8 wickets and the second Test by 113 runs. From the beginning of the series, India struggled to perform and found themselves on the back foot.

This series is also significant for New Zealand, who hadn’t won a Test match against India in 36 years until they broke that record in the first Test. With their victory in the second Test, New Zealand not only won the series but also achieved the remarkable feat of winning a Test series in India for the first time.
India’s chances of making it to the World Test Championship final are at risk. They need to win the third Test of the series, which will be held in Mumbai.
