Why Ben Stokes won’t be able to play the IPL for 2 seasons after skipping IPL 2025 auction

This will be his second year away from the league after skipping IPL 2024 to manage his workload.

Ben Stokes has chosen not to participate in IPL 2025, as he hasn’t registered for the auction. This will be his second year away from the league after skipping IPL 2024 to manage his workload.

Notably, Stokes’ name is missing from the list of 52 English players who have registered for the auction which will be held on November 24 and 25.

The 33-year-old all-rounder, decided to skip the IPL so he can focus on playing for England in Test matches, especially because he’s had some injuries lately. Earlier this year, he missed both the T20 World Cup and IPL to recover from a hamstring injury.

With a busy year ahead, his role will be very important as England gets ready for the important Test series and white ball tournaments.

Ben Stokes won’t be able to play the IPL 2025 and 2026 season

Ben Stokes, who has opted out IPL 2025 auction, will miss the 2026 season as well. This is due to a new IPL rule aimed at increasing player commitment, which states that foreign players who fail to enter the auction, will also be ineligible to register in the following year’s player auction.

The rule says,” Any Overseas Player will have to register for the Big Auction. In case the overseas player doesn’t register, then he will be ineligible to register in the following year’s player auction.”

Why Stokes Won’t get banned?

Since Ben Stokes has not registered his name for the IPL 2025 auction, he will have to miss the 2026 season as well. However, he will not face a ban. If he had entered the auction and been selected but then opted out, he would have been banned from participating in the tournament and player auction for 2 seasons.

The rule says,” Any player who registers in the player auction and after getting picked at the auction, makes himself unavailable before the start of the season, will get banned from participating in the tournament and player auction for 2 Seasons.

Meanwhile, James Anderson, who has taken the most wickets for England in Test cricket, has registered for the IPL auction even though he retired from international cricket earlier this year and hasn’t played T20 cricket since 2014.

Jofra Archer, the 2020 IPL MVP, will also be in the auction, hoping to return to the IPL after recovering from multiple injuries.
