Twitter erupts as Scotland produce a huge upset; Bangladesh go down by 6 runs
Scotland were off to a poor start with the bat, losing skipper Kyle Coetzer in the third over. Runs came in with great difficulty for the Scots, with Mustafizur Rahman and Mohammad Saifuddin making life incredibly difficult with the new ball. Matthew Cross and George Munsey got a small partnership going, adding 40 runs, that stabilized the innings momentarily.
However, the Scottish middle order did not themselves much after Mahedi Hasan dismissed both Cross and Munsey in the same over. They lost three more wickets in a space of 5 deliveries, losing Richie Berrington Michael Leask and Calum MacLeod. They were reduced to 52/6, in dire need of a big partnership to take them through to a decent total.
Chris Greaves provided that much-needed spark for Scotland, scoring a 28-ball 45, including 4 fours and 2 sixes. He added a much-needed 51-run partnership with Mark Watt, before giving Scotland a stellar finish in the final three overs. Greaves, in the company of Josh Davey and Safyaan Sharif, helped his side get 36 runs in the last three overs, helping them finish with 140/9.
Mehedi Hasan returned with figures of 3/19 in his 4, with Shakib and Mustafizur picking two each.
Chris Greaves does it with the ball as well
Bangladesh lost both their openers, Liton Das and Soumya Sarkar, inside the first four overs, with Bradley Wheal and Josh Davey doing the damage. Run scoring got a little difficult for Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim in the next few overs, but as they approached the halfway mark, Mushfiqur upped the gear.
Just when the partnership between these two big stalwarts of Bangladesh was getting better, the star with the bat Chris Greaves, dismissed both of them in a space of two overs. The required rate kept bouncing out of their reach post then, despite Afif Hossain and Mehedi Hasan’s late flourish.
Skipper Mahmudullah found no real connection on the day, and struggled to see the game through. Hasan’s final overexploits helped them reduce the deficit, but the defeat was almost inevitable.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to Scotland registering the first big upset of the tournament.

What a win for #Scotland! Fabulous fightback by the lower-order batters after a scary collapse and the bowlers have backed that up with an excellent performance as well.
Chris Greaves obviously the star – 45(28) and the big wickets of Shakib and Rahim!#BANvSCO #T20WorldCup

This is a remarkable win for Scotland. From where they were, this game, and in history. This is their first great win in a world cup. And I don't think we've ever had a team with as long and proud a cricket community whose had to wait this long for their first World Cup win.

One of the great comeback victories in T20 history from Scotland, who were given just a 4% chance of winning this game by WinViz when they were 54-6 in their batting innings.#T20WorldCup #BANvSCO

ICC rankings should always be taken with a pinch of salt but #Bangladesh are ranked sixth – ahead of Australia, Afghanistan and West Indies – in men’s T20Is
HUGE win for #Scotland, even before you consider that they were 53 for 6 off 11.3 overs

One thing I love about T20 cricket is how any team on their day can beat anyone. The gap between teams drastically reduced in this format. This Scotland vs Bangladesh going down to the wire is such a great advert for the start of this tournament.

Remember, #Scotland were 53/6 at one point…#ICCT20WorldCup2021

Incredible win by Scotland against Bangladesh in the T20I World Cup. Scotland scored 140/9 after being 59/6 after 12.4 overs. Associate nations must play T20I and ODI World Cups. Played @CricketScotland . @MeerGoose11 #Cricket #Scotland

Scotland now win their first ever senior level ICC tournament match against a Test playing team.
In fact it is only their 2nd win in 19 matches. Their only win prior to today was against Hong Kong in 2016 T20 World Cup.#T20WorldCup #BANvSCO
