After an unsuccessful debut for Melbourne Renegades, Unmukt Chand looked more in his elements playing only his second-ever Big Bash League (BBL) encounter on Wednesday (January 19).

Facing Sydney Thunder at the MCG in Renegades’ last league stage game of the tournament, Unmukt struck an encouraging 29 off 22 balls during the run-chase.

Walking into bat at No.4 again with Renegades requiring 170 runs in 20 overs, Unmukt Chand made one four and a pair of sixes in an important partnership of 68 runs with skipper Aaron Finch.

The eye-catching aspect of Unmukt Chand’s stay were the couple of sixes that he screamed through the on-side. Combining his natural elegance with power and timing, the batter sent the ball sailing over the boundary ropes twice before his untimely dismissal.

For the first one, playing against left-arm seamer Daniel Sams, Unmukt pulled a short ball over the fine-leg boundary ride. The six came off the fourth ball of the ninth over in the Renegades’ run-chase as their middle-order bat strived to keep them in line with the asking rate.

The second maximum of the two saw Unmukt Chand smash pacer Nathan McAndrew over the deep mid-wicket region where the fielder could only stand and watch the ball sail past his head. At one stage, whilst the ball was in the air, the fielder looked interested in taking a catch. But the ball had enough connection to land next to the ropes.

Unfortunately for Unmukt, his promising innings was cut short during the 16th over when he got out against Tanveer Sangha. As in his first game with Renegades, the batter’s dismissal derailed his team’s progress and led to a middle and lower-order collapse.

The Renegades faced a one-run loss, finishing 169/7 and suffering a bitter loss which summed up their disastrous season. The team ended eighth in the points table with only 3 wins from their 14 games.
