BCCI appointed Rahul Dravid as India’s head coach after the team’s forgettable journey in the T20 World Cup 2021. He replaced Ravi Shastri who had set the standard high in terms of results during his stint with the team. Though India couldn’t win an ICC trophy, Shastri played a key role in making the side the best in the world in Tests irrespective of the conditions.
While Dravid is still in his early days as the head coach and has completed only around six months, comparison between his and Shastri’s coaching style is inevitable. Former India captain and current BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has had his say now on the matter and has backed Dravid to become a successful coach of the team.
“He (Dravid) is as intense, as meticulous and as professional as he was during his playing days. The only difference is that now he does not have to bat at No. 3 for India which I feel was harder since he had to face the best bowlers of the world which he also did exceptionally well for a long period of time.
“As a coach also he (Dravid) will do a remarkable job as he is honest and he has the talent,” Ganguly said while speaking to the media on the sidelines of a promotional event in Kolkata.
Ganguly also noted that Dravid will make mistakes during his stint but will always strive for the good of Indian cricket. He also pointed out differences in coaching styles of Dravid and Shastri.
“He will make mistakes as everybody does but as long as you try doing the right things you will achieve success more than others. They are different people with different personalities. One is at you all the time which is his strength while the other will quietly do his job inspite of being one of the greatest of all time. No two people will be successful the same way,” Ganguly further added.
Rahul Dravid is currently enjoying a well deserved break with the IPL in progress. His next assignment will be the T20I series against South Africa in June at home after which India will travel to Ireland (for 2 T20Is) and then England a lone Test match and a complete white-ball series.
