WATCH: Bowled, but Not Out! Bails deny Shaheen Afridi a guaranteed wicket

Shaheen Afridi didn’t make the best of starts to his captaincy stint for the Lahore Qalandars after his team lost the PSL 2022 match against Multan Sultans on Saturday, January 29 at the National Stadium in Karachi. The Qalandars lost by five wickets after failing to defend 206. On the bowling front, the rub of the green didn’t go in Afridi’s favour either.

The left-armer brought the Qalandars back into the game after conceding only one run in the penultimate over of the Sultans’ run-chase. The Young Turk consistently clocked above the 140kph mark and made it tough for the batters in the middle. Afridi also got the crucial wickets of Singapore international Tim David and the dangerous Sohaib Maqsood.

In the third ball of the same over, Afridi created another chance of picking a wicket, but luck didn’t smile on him. The seamer churned out a 143.8kph delivery to which David didn’t have any answer. The ball went on to crash onto the stumps, but the bails didn’t get dislodged. The lights lit up, indicating that the ball had brushed the off-stump on its way to the keeper.

With 16 runs to win off the last over, Khushdil Shah smashed Haris Rauf for three back-to-back fours followed by a six. Shah’s four-ball knock of 18 helped the Sultans snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Afridi finished with a spell of 4-0-40-1 in the high-scoring game. Afridi took over from Sohail Akhtar, who led the Qalandars in the previous two seasons. As far as the game was concerned, the Qalandars scored 206 on the back of Fakhar Zaman’s 35-ball 76.

From there on, Shan Masood’s 83 took the game away from them. Masood along with Mohammad Rizwan stitched together a 150-run stand for the opening wicket to lay the platform in the run-chase.
