Today when Ravindra Jadeja is among the well-established premier allrounders in world cricket and is regarded as one of India’s finest spinners, it begs belief that he was once really struggling to find his feet at the international stage.

During the initial phase of his India career, Jadeja, yet to enter his twenties, showcased his talent and promise in small bursts without really stamping his authority. His failures were brutally scrutinised among the fans and the experts, who felt he has been rushed to the highest level of the game.

Two such infamous outings came in the successive editions of the T20 World Cup in 2009 and 2010. In the first, Ravindra Jadeja’s painstaking 25 off 35 held India back in the run-chase of 154 in a must-win Super 8 encounter against England.

The second one is also from the Super 8 stage of the next edition of the tournament in the Caribbean, where Jadeja ended up conceding six consecutive maximums off his gentle left-arm spin bowling.

Ravindra Jadeja was smashed to all parts of the ground in Barbados.

When Ravindra Jadeja was hammered for six successive maximums

The fixture was India’s first in Group F of the T20 World Cup 2010 in Barbados. Facing the mighty Australians on a flat batting surface, Ravindra Jadeja failed to put a leash on run-scoring as the then India captain MS Dhoni would’ve wanted him to. He was hammered across the Kensington Oval for six consecutive maximums, split two different sets of three.

The first set of maximums took place at the end of the fourth over of the Australian innings where a rampaging Shane Watson got into Jadeja and smashed his willow. The first two deliveries – both short in nature – gave Watson enough time to quickly go on the backfoot and unleash his pull shots towards the deep mid-wicket region.

The next ball was also a short one but quicker in nature and cramped Watson for room. Yet, the in-form right-hander had enough time under his belt to get the ball sailing over the fine-leg region.

After Watson had unleashed his wrath on Ravindra Jadeja, it was time for David Warner to get into the act. The explosive left-hander hit a set of three maximums at the start of Jadeja’s next over – the 10th over of the Aussie innings – with the first one setting the tone up for what was to follow.

In a brutal hit, Warner dispatched Jadeja’s full-pitched ball for a flat six through the long-on region. The next six was also aimed there only, just that it went slightly wider with the angle from around-the-wicket. The ball went between sweeper cover and the long-on and lobbed just over the boundary ropes.

The next one was perhaps the best of the lot in terms of sheer asthetics and the timing, as Warner scaled the long-on region once again but this time the ball went over the roof at the iconic stadium in Barbados.

Jadeja didn’t bowl another over in the innings and finished with horrible figures of 0 for 38, as India conceded a massive 184/5 and lost the match by 49 runs.
