WATCH: Rohit Sharma pulls for 4,4 and then gets out playing the pull again

In his first innings as the new full-time Test skipper, Rohit Sharma made a characteristically elegant and flowing start before his promising knock was cut short by another miscued pull to the deep fine-leg region.

After few early sighters, Rohit looked in imperious touch against Sri Lanka’s pace battery, scoring 29 at better than a run-a-ball with multiple boundaries.

The experienced opener hit as many as six of those in his brief but very impressive stay. However, just when it seemed Rohit Sharma is setting his eyes on a big score, he was hauled out in the deep behind square on the on-side following.

Rohit Sharma’s promising innings cut short by another miscued pull

But then a delivering near his front shoulder got to the batter quicker than he anticipated and he could only mishit his attempted pull into the hands of Suranga Lakmal.

It was a bitter end to what was a promising innings upon Test comeback for Rohit Sharma. The batter was playing in Test whites for the first time since August last year after being rested for the home series against New Zealand in November and missing the South Africa tour with a hamstring injury.

The form of dismissal must have been a Deja Vu for Indian fans, who have now seen Rohit getting out on the pull multiple times over the last couple of years. While the batter has been a tremendous player since his promotion to the top of the order in late 2019, Rohit’s developing a notorious tendency of falling prematurely on the pull.

An excellent backfoot player, Rohit seems to instinctively go after the cross-batted shot through the on-side. But it does feel as if pacers are now beginning to play on his ego a touch and are challenging him to continue pulling them irrespective of the length and speed on the ball.

Rohit took the bait during The Oval Test as well last year when England pacer Ollie Robinson banged the ball in at the good length and the batter miscued his pull to the deep fine-leg region after scoring a terrific hundred.
