Pant scored a commendable 64 runs off 57 balls, keeping India alive in the contest.
During the second innings of the third Test match between India and New Zealand in Mumbai, Rishabh Pant expressed his unhappiness with the third umpire’s decision after UltraEdge displayed a spike and later was given out.
The incident happened in the fourth ball of the 22nd over, when another appeal for a caught behind was met with a shake of the head from umpire Richard Illingworth. New Zealand decided to review the decision, with Tom Latham signaling for a ‘T’ after consulting his teammates. The delivery was a good length ball outside off that turned back into Rishabh Pant as he danced down the track, looking to block. He misjudged the pitch of the ball and played outside the line, bringing his bat and pad closer together. The ball missed the inside edge and lobbed off his front pad to the right of the keeper, where Blundell swiftly moved across to take the catch.
Replays revealed a fair delivery, with the ball, pad, and bat all in close proximity. UltraEdge registered a spike, suggesting it could have been the bat hitting the pad. However, the TV umpire, Paul Reiffel, ruled that the ball had brushed the inside edge before lobbing up off the front pad, and Pant was given out. Despite Pant’s protests to the on-field umpires that the bat had struck the pad and not the ball, he had to make the long walk back to the pavilion. He leaves the field after a well-made 64 runs off 57 balls, shaking his head in disbelief.
After Rishabh Pant’s wicket at 106-7, India are currently at 120-7, with Washington Sundar on 11* and Ravichandran Ashwin on 8*. They need 27 more runs to win and avoid a whitewash while keeping their hopes alive for qualifying for the World Test Championship final.
