Seifert played a lone hand in Sussex’s failed run-chase of 200.

The T20 Blast 2022, in just its second week of action, has produced outstanding cricket in all three departments, displaying a mix of towering hits, brilliant bowling and outstanding fielding efforts.

Three hundreds have already been scored in the competition. Paul Stirling scored 119 off 51 for Warwickshire against Northamptonshire, including a 34-run over against James Sales, before Chris Lynn smashed 66-ball 106* for Northants against Leicestershire.

On Saturday, New Zealand’s Tim Seifert struck a brilliant 56-ball 100*, leading Sussex’s charge in a failed 200-run chase against Hampshire at The Rose Bowl in Southampton. The swashbuckling wicketkeeper struck nine hits to the fence, and five over it - one of which went sailing over the stands straight into the burger van placed outside of the seating area.

Seifert and Delray Rawlins, batting together in the 13th over of the chase bowled by leg-spinner Mason Crane, had already taken 11 overs off the first five balls, with each striking a four. Crane bowled one angling in on length to close out the over, and Seifert went quickly onto his knees to unleash a powerful slogs-sweep. The ball went right over the mid-wicket stands, and through to the burger van placed behind.

Sussex were 101/4 at that stage, needing further 99 off 36, and eventually ended 22 short at 177/6, with Seifert remaining unbeaten at 100. Rawlins was the only there batter with a double-digit score, striking four fours and a six in a 21-ball 32. Right-arm quick Nathan Ellis (4-024-1) and left-arm spinner Liam Dawson(3-0-17-1) were the most impactful bowlers for Hampshire.

Earlier, skipper James Vince (65 off 41) and Ben McDermott (60 off 35) got Hampshire off to a flying 124-run start off 11.4 overs, after being put in to bat. Toby Albert (23* off 15) and Dawson (14 off 5) ensured that the two-time champions finished strongly at 199/6.

It was Hampshire’s first win of the season from their fifth game, which places them eighth in the South Group points table, while Sussex are placed fourth with three wins and as many defeats.
