In an absolutely bizarre incident, New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel refused to walk off despite being out in a straightforward caught & bowled dismissal in the Plunket Shield on Monday (March 14).
Playing for Central Districts in a Round 6 game of New Zealand’s premier domestic first-class competition against the Northern Districts, Patel was out caught by seamer Brett Randell after an attempted straight drive.
But in awkward scenes, he then refused to leave the batting crease for almost half a minute before sanity prevailed and the two umpires declared him out.
Even if Ajaz Patel was waiting for the two umpires to intervene all this while, why he did so in the first place is a mystery altogether as he was clearly out.

Ajaz Patel was out but stood his ground for nearly half-a-minute in Napier.
Ajaz Patel’s refusal to take the walk back for 24 long seconds made for a strange incident, the clip of which only triggered interest and curiosity as to why the lower-order batter didn’t leave his ground?
Patel hit the ball straight to Randell, who completed a clean grab and kickstarted the celebrations with the rest of the Northern Districts fielding unit. But despite having seen the catch taken absolutely clearly, the 33-year-old stood his ground for no reason and left the pitch only after the two umpires seemingly told him to.
At one point, even Northern Districts fielders were left bemused and asked Patel to consider going off. But he waited and only when the standing umpire went to his on-side partner and they together declared him out, did he do the needful.

Ajaz Patel was involved in something less bizarre but definitely memorable in November last year when he bagged a rarest of rare 10-fer in an innings during the Mumbai Test of the tour of India.
Patel dismissed all Indian batters in the first half of the game and became only the third bowler to do so after the great Anil Kumble and England’s Jim Laker.
