Ambati Rayudu didn’t make the best of starts to his campaign in the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL). The right-handed batter looked good, having scored 15 runs off 17 balls with one four and a six. He came to bat after Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) Umesh Yadav picked up his second wicket in the form of Devon Conway, who made his IPL debut for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Wankhede Stadium.

Rayudu started his knock with a few dots and singles before collecting a four off Varun Chakravarthy. Although he got a thick inside-edge, he would have been happy with the result. In the next over by the KKR off-spinner, Rayudu smashed a classy six over the cover region. Just when he was seeming to get the measure of the conditions and the opposition bowling, he got out.

In the fourth ball of the ninth over, Narine bowled a good length ball and Ravindra Jadeja tapped the ball on the on-side off his backfoot. When the ball went to KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer, Jadeja refused the single. But Rayudu was already half-way down the track and was in big trouble.

Iyer kept his calm and threw the ball to Narine, who took the bails off with utmost ease. After the dismissal, the Super Kings found themselves in all sorts of trouble after finding themselves at 52 for four in 8.4 overs.

Before the 2022 mega auction, the Super Kings released Rayudu and rather retained Jadeja, former skipper MS Dhoni, Ruturaj Gaikwad and England’s Moeen Ali. While playing for CSK from 2018 to 2021, Rayudu earned only 2.20 crore. But the 2022 auction, the veteran fetched INR 6.75 crores.

The Super Kings started the bidding after which the Delhi Capitals (DC) joined in. Thereafter, DC backed out and CSK were engaged in a bidding war with the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), the 2016 champions of the IPL.

In the end, Kane Williamson’s Sunrisers threw in the towel and the Super Kings bagged Rayudu back. The 26-year-old will now be looking to churn out more useful knocks for his team in the ongoing IPL edition.
