Ben Stokes’ promising first-innings effort in the WI v ENG 1st Test against the West Indies was cut short by a peach of a delivery from hosts’ third seamer Jayden Seales in the ongoing first Test in Antigua.

The premier England allrounder was outdone by a vicious yorker from Seales, whose high-speed full-pitched delivery tailed in late and evaded Stokes downswing to hit the leg-stump.

Stokes had batted very well up until that point in trying to revive the England innings from trouble waters. But he had to make a long walk back after a piece of the absolute brilliance from Seales with the semi-new Dukes ball at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.

Walking into bat with England reeling at 27/3 – which soon became 48/4 – Ben Stokes played a fighting knock of 36 from 95 deliveries, showing admirable composure and solid defence in a difficult situation against some quality bowling from the hosts.

However, on a surface where England batters never quite felt set, Stokes was then dismissed by a terrific yorker from Seales, who released a full-pitched ball, which dipped in late into the left-hander and evaded his downswing to hit the base of the leg-stump.

The dismissal can be seen here in the highlights package for Day 1 from 7:06 minutes.

In a closer look at the dismissal, it became obvious that Ben Stokes had understandably played for the initial line of the ball, before it curved in very late and smashed onto the stumps, giving the batter absolutely no time to make a last-minute adjustment.

Stokes’ wicket also ended a promising stand between him and the in-form Jonny Bairstow. The duo helped England recover from a precarious 48/4 to 115/4 before the next wicket fell.

While Stokes departed, Bairstow continued his brilliant innings and recorded his second Test century in his last two Tests for England. Bairstow, who was one of England’s only shining lights on another gloomy Ashes tour Down Under, recorded an unbeaten 109 till the close of play to take his team to relative safety at 268/6.
