WATCH: Epic confusion in PSL! Hales involved in comical run out after LBW appeal
Islamabad United batter Alex Hales was run out in a bizarre manner during the 2022 edition of the Pakistan Super League (IPL). During the game against Quetta Gladiators on Saturday, February 12, Hales was left clueless and was run out at the striker’s end. In the 11th ball of the United innings, Shahid Afridi struck Hales on the pads and appealed for an LBW.
But the umpire didn’t pay heed to Afridi’s appeal as the ball would have snuck past the leg stump. In the meantime, Hales ran down in an attempt to take a single. But Asif Ali, at the non-striker’s end, turned down the run. By that time, Hales was already halfway down the track. Naseem Shah threw the ball to Sarfaraz Ahmed, who took off the bails.

The dismissal was a lucky break for the Gladiators as Hales was firing on all cylinders. After being put in to bat first, the United got off to a blazing start. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Hales put on 48 runs for the opening wicket off five overs. After Shah castled Gurbaz, Hales carried on in his own merry way.
Hales went on to score 62 runs off 38 balls with the help of four fours and four sixes. When he got out, the United were dominating with their score at 102 for three in 10.4 overs. Hales’ departure opened the doors for the Gladiators to some extent. Asif Ali, Muhammad Akhlaq and Azam Khan failed to make much of an impact.
Hales has looked in ominous form in the ongoing edition of the PSL. In six matches, the right-hander has notched 230 runs at an average of 46 and a strike rate of 159.72. He is also the leading run-scorer for the United in the T20 championship.
In the first five games for the United, Hales opened the batting alongside Ireland’s Paul Stirling and played some whirlwind knocks. Prior to taking part in the PSL, Hales also did well for the Sydney Thunder in the 2021-22 edition of the Big Bash League (BBL).
In the previous PSL edition, Hales played for the Karachi Kings before moving to the United, led by Shadab Khan.
