WATCH: Jason Holder misjudges, but completes brilliant catch backwards to dismiss Jonny Bairstow

Former West Indies skipper Jason Holder is a pretty safe fielder and catcher and showed some of his skills during his team’s opening Test against England at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua. After electing to bat first, the Three Lions put a competitive score of 311 in 100.3. Jonny Bairstow was arguably their standout batter, having scored 140 runs with 21 fours.

After the Brits lost half their side with the score at 115 in only the 40th over, Bairstow took charge and carried his side to safer shores. It needed a special effort to dismiss the right-handed batter and Holder produced one in the second day’s play. When England lost nine wickets, Bairstow tried to add some quick runs on the board with Jack Leach at the non-striker’s end.

Bairstow went hard at the ball, but could only manage a top-edge. The ball kept hanging in the air for quite some time and Holder tried to position himself properly at the short third-man region. The ball was swirling in the air due to the wind and Holder had to keep his concentration to complete the catch. During this while, he tried to go back and seemed to have lost his balance.

In the end, Holder caught hold of the ball and tumbled on the ground. It was an important wicket as Bairstow looked in stupendous touch. Holder was also outstanding with the ball as he finished with figures of 21-11-24-2. He got the crucial wickets of Daniel Lawrence and Ben Foakes.

Jayden Seales was the pick of the bowlers for the West Indies as he picked up four wickets. Seales made his Test debut last year and has featured consistently for them in the purest format. Kemar Roach and Alzarri Joseph also picked up two wickets apiece for the Caribbean team.

Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul couldn’t make a breakthrough in the 13 overs he bowled. As far as Holder is concerned, he will have a role to play with the bat as well. Back in 2019, he scored a double century against Joe Root and Co. in Test cricket.
