WATCH: Non-striker nearly reaches mid-pitch before ball is bowled in hilarious incident in ECL
Over the years, the term ‘Mankading’ has given rise to a number of controversies. Experts and the netizens have had divided opinions on the matter. While some believed that a bowler was well within his rights to run the non-striker out in his delivery stride, some reckoned that the form of dismissal is against the Spirit of Cricket.
During a Group E playoff match in the European Cricket League (ECL) a bizarre incident took place. On Thursday, March 10, Pak I Care Badalona and the Punjab Lions Nicosia locked horns at the Cartama Oval. After being put in to bat first, the Nicosia scored 81 for the loss of seven wickets. During the last over of the innings, the non-striker backed up a little too much.
He started running even before bowler Atif Muhammad released the ball. The left-arm pacer had the presence of mind and stopped in his run-up. But he didn’t take the bails off and rather, had a chat with the umpire. Thereafter, Roman Mazumder, who was at the striker’s end, smashed a four and took the Nicosia over the 80-run mark.

Tejwinder Singh top-scored for Nicosia with 27 runs off 13 balls with three fours and two sixes. However, the Badalona won the game by seven wickets after chasing down the target with 13 balls left. Opener Muhammad Babar scored a 20-ball 42 with one four and five sixes.
In the end, Sheroz Ahmed’s seven-ball 18 helped the Badalona get past the finishing line. As far the ‘Mankading’ is concerned, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) recently made some changes to it. The law has been moved from Law 41 (unfair play) to Law 38 (run out).
Back in 2019, Ravi Ashwin created a massive controversy after running out Jos Buttler in his delivery stride. During a match between Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals, Ashwin resorted to the dismissal and earned a lot of brickbats from experts and netizens. Thereafter, the 35-year-old Ashwin said that he did nothing, but play as per the laws of the game.
