India grabbed a consolation win in the final ODI of the series against New Zealand in Queenstown ahead of the Women’s ODI World Cup in the same country from March first week. One of the positives from the series for India was wicketkeeper batter Richa Ghosh, who smashed the fastest fifty by an Indian player in women’s ODIs.

Richa, whose belligerent knock, earned rave reviews in the series, looked in audacious touch in her short stay at the crease in the fifth and final ODI on Thursday. Her seven off eight balls included one boundary which came off a classic MS Dhoni-style pull shot – feet together, arms parallel with the shoulders and a quirky jerk-like movement, reminiscent of Dhoni.

After her 26-ball record-breaking fifty, Richa had gone on record to state that MS Dhoni was her idol. A wicketkeeper batter like former India men’s captain, Richa has been in and out of the team but with the World Cup closing in, is quickly turning into an integral member of the women’s ODI Team.

Interviewed post her knock by Mithali Raj for BCCI Channel, Ghosh spoke of her half-century and rare feat and the player she idolises.

“The feeling is unique. First fifty for me. Last time, I got out in Australia on 44. So it felt good,” Ghosh told. “I used to follow my father when I was a kid. I did my training with father only when I started off in cricket. When I started watching cricket, I saw Dhoni and his power hitting and he came my idol.”

India now head into the Women’s World Cup with their first fixture against Pakistan on March 6th in Mount Maunganui.
