Experienced South African pacer Shabnim Ismail turned yet another game of cricket for her side, delivering a timely wicket off her bowling in the all-crucial ICC Women’s World Cup encounter against Pakistan on Friday (March 11).
Ismail delivered an eye-catching caught and bowl dismissal for the South African women’s team when the opposition needed another eight runs to secure victory off the last five deliveries. Chasing 224 for a win, Pakistan found themselves 216/8 ahead of the second ball of the 50th over when Ismail sent back opposition batter Diana Baig.
With Baig intent on hitting the ball up, Shabnim Ismail delivered a full-pitched slower ball that gripped on the surface at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui and evaded the batter’s downswing to find the top-edge. The ball ballooned to the right of the bowling mark and Ismail quickly ran across near the mid-on region to complete the catch.

Pakistan needed 14 runs off the last 10 balls with three wickets in hand. But some superb piece of bowling, including an excellent final over from Shabnim Ismail, eventually won the game for South Africa.
Interestingly, this is not the first time that Ismail has come to South Africa’s rescue when they have been on the verge of a defeat against their Pakistani counterparts.
While the cricketer turned things around for her side on this occasion with the ball, she let her bat do the talking at a critical point of a league game played in the previous edition of the World Cup back in 2017.
In a close-fought encounter, the equation also came down to 14 off the last 10 balls but with South Africa batting. This is when Shabnim Ismail struck fours in a space of four balls to take her team to a famous win.
