How unlucky were Mumbai indians there? That was some effort from Suryakumar Yadav but alas!

Pat Cummins recorded the joint-fastest fifty in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Wednesday (April 6). He equaled KL Rahul’s record smacking a 14-ball half-century which led to Mumbai Indians succumbing to their third defeat in a row. But amidst his onslaught Suryakumar Yadav’s exceptional fielding effort at the boundary went unnoticed.

Rather if it was a legal delivery, the antics from Surya would’ve ended Cummins' breathtaking knock as well. Moreover, it also stopped the Australian batter from recording the fastest ever fifty in the history of IPL. If not for Surya’s effort, Cummins would’ve reached his fifty off his 13th delivery itself.

It happened in the 16th over of the innings when things were already spoiled for Mumbai Indians. Daniel Sams had already gone for 22 runs including three sixes. He delivered a waist-high full toss next which Cummins managed to slice down the ground with a single hand.

Surya, stationed at long-off, caught the ball initially before realising that the momentum was taking him over the ropes. He smartly lobbed the ball in the air, came back into the playing field and completed the catch only to know that the delivery was deemed a no-ball. The third umpire looked at several replays but Surya had saved a six and an embarrassment for his side to concede a fastest fifty in the history of the tournament.

Suryakumar Yadav and Cummins shine in their first game of the season

It was the first game of the season for both Suryakumar Yadav and Pat Cummins and both of them shone for their respective teams. Surya scored a brilliant half-century helping MI post a competitive total of 161 runs in their 20 overs. He scored 52 off 36 deliveries with five fours and two sixes.

Pat Cummins bowled well to dismiss Ishan Kishan and Surya both but was taken apart for 23 runs in the final over. He ended with the figures of 2/49 in his four overs. But the man more than made up for it with the bat later.
