Why Is Cameron Green Not In Australia Playing XI for NZ vs AUS 1st T20I?

He smashed 118* against South Africa in an ODI recently.

Australia men’s cricket team is set to take on New Zealand in a three-match T20I series from October 1. The Trans-Tasman rivalry will resume with the two looking to prepare towards the T20 World Cup. However, the star attraction, Cameron Green, is among the names who will miss this series.

Mitchell Marsh will continue to lead the Australia side with Marcus Stoinis returning to the fold. Mitchell Starc’s retirement from the T20I format and Green’s unavailability will give the Aussies a chance to experiment a bit. The first T20I of the series will take place at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.

The news from the toss is Australia have won the toss and chose to field first.

Why is Cameron Green not in the Australia playing XI for NZ vs AUS 1st T20I?

Cameron Green was not picked for the New Zealand tour so that he could participate in the first round of the Sheffield Shield. The 26-year-old all-rounder made his return from a back injury in June but hasn’t bowled.

Green wants to play a role in the Ashes 2025 with the ball as well. To get back into the bowling rhythm, he has opted to skip the T20I series and play some red-ball cricket.

The all-rounder has been incredible in the shorter format since his return. He has scored 258 runs from eight innings at an average of 43 while striking at 168. Green has cemented his place in the T20I side, but without him and Josh Inglis, Australia will be slightly depleted on this tour.

Australia T20I squad vs New Zealand: Mitchell Marsh (capt), Sean Abbott, Xavier Bartlett, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Matt Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Owen, Matthew Short, Marcus Stoinis, and Adam Zampa.

Cameron Green’s big role in the Ashes 2025

Green has batted at number three in Test cricket since his return to action, but Australia would want him to bowl in the Ashes. His bowling gives the team a bit more flexibility and helps them manage their pacers better.

With captain Pat Cummins’ availability still unclear, it is important for the home side that their star all-rounder bowls regularly. Australia do have Beau Webster in the side as well, who can bowl medium pace, but Green is potentially more valuable to the side.

Green has over 1,500 runs in his Test career at an average of 34 with two hundreds and seven fifties. With the ball, he has taken 35 scalps at 35.31 apiece.
