Mitchell Marsh Continues Blazing Form Ahead of India Series With Maiden T20I Century Against New Zealand

Chandra Moulee Das

Australia T20I captain Mitchell Marsh looked in blazing form during the recent three-match T20I series against New Zealand, slamming his maiden century in the format earlier today (October 4).

The explosive opener blasted an unbeaten 103* off 52 balls, including eight boundaries and seven maximums. Marsh’s heroics helped his side chase down a target of 157 with two overs to spare and eventually seal the series 2-0.

The knock was even more impressive since five of Australia’s top six batters fell for single-digit scores in the decisive clash but Marsh single-handedly took over the onus of taking his team over the finishing line.

The 33-year-old’s recent ton comes in a series of brilliant knocks and will give him a lot of confidence before India comes to visit next for a three-match ODI series from October 19 followed by five T20Is.

Prior to his century today, Marsh registered a fiery knock of 85 off 43 balls in the first match of the New Zealand series.

In the preceding white-ball series against South Africa, Marsh was equally impressive finishing as the top-scorer in the three-match ODI leg with 206 runs at an average of 68.66, which included a century and a fifty.

Before that, Australia locked horns in three T20Is too against the Proteas where Marsh averaged close to 30s and hit a fifty too.

His recent purple patch will be big boost as he gears up to lead the Aussies against India in his upcoming assignment. He is expected to captain both the ODI and T20I side with 50-over captain Pat Cummins out due to a back injury.

On the other hand, India announced their squad for the tour as well. While there wasn’t any shockers in the T20I setup, the ODI squad witnessed a major development with Rohit Sharma relinquishing the leadership reins to Shubman Gill, who will now make his ODI captaincy debut Down Under.
