Often acknowledged as the stepping stone to higher-level international cricket, the upcoming 15th edition of the U19 Cricket World Cup is poised to commence on January 19. Similar to its previous editions, this year too will witness numerous promising players striving to showcase their best performance with the ultimate goal of securing a spot in the senior national teams of their respective countries.
Throughout its history, the U19 World Cup has served as a platform for numerous budding talents. The involvement of these young players in a worldwide competition at an early stage has played a pivotal role in shaping their subsequent senior international careers.
With the tournament slated to be played in the Rainbow Nation, let us look at five Proteas players who could make an impact in the upcoming World Cup.
The left-arm fast bowler, entering his second U-19 World Cup has already participated in two FC as well as an equal number of List A and five T20 matches at the senior level. He is also a member of the Paarl Royals squad in the SA20 League. Maphaka possesses raw pace, the ability to swing the ball both ways and is being hailed as the next Kagiso Rabada. Maphaka is making rapid strides in his cricket career and has already showcased his skills in a red-ball game for South Africa A in Sri Lanka, where he secured three wickets.
Batter Steve Stolk also made a mark in the U19 tri-series involving India and Afghanistan, amassing 180 runs at an average of 45 and an impressive strike rate of 134. Stolk hit 10 sixes in his first four innings during the series and aims to continue his fine form for the hosts.
South Africa’s squad for the upcoming U19 World Cup includes all-rounder Romashan Pillay, who has already debuted in List A cricket with the South Africa emerging squad and is considered a rising star with abundant talent and skills.
Nqobani is a bowling all-rounder and right-arm seam bowler, typically serving as the opening bowler or first change. He bats right-handed in the middle to lower order.

Juan James is the newly appointed captain for the U19 World Cup. He succeeded David Teeger, who was removed as captain due to concerns over protests related to his statement on the Israel-Hamas war. James previously led South Africa U19 in July last year against Bangladesh. With experience in 5 first-class, 5 List A, and 5 T20 matches, James has scored 222 runs, including a top score of 38 and has taken 11 wickets, including a 5-wicket haul in List A cricket.
