Injury Scare For India On Eve Of 1st Test vs West Indies; Key Player Injures Finger in Training

Aditya Ighe

He recently starred for India with an invaluable century in the last Test at The Oval.

The participation of Washington Sundar hangs in the balance as he was troubled by a finger injury earlier today. The Shubman Gill-led team must be tense after the news of the all-rounder, just a day before the India vs West Indies 1st Test at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Washington Sundar in discomfort ahead of India vs West Indies 1st Test

According to a Times of India report, the Indian all-rounder was seen troubled by the finger injury that forced him to skip catching drills during the practice session. Despite the pain, the off-spinner bowled long spells in the net sessions, but continued to show signs of discomfort. Sundar eventually asked the team doctor for some extra tape on his bowling hand, raising concerns over his availability for the series opener starting on October 2.

Soon to be turned 26-year-old, Sundar has slowly climbed up the ranks to become a vital cog in India’s Test team in recent times. He offers balance and depth with his crafty off-spin and outstanding batting credentials. He also provides a new dimension to India’s attack, including the other three left-arm spinners. While India has a like-for-like replacement in Axar Patel, the left-arm spinner’s style mirrors that of Ravindra Jadeja, who is currently the world’s No.1 all-rounder in the longest format.

Washington Sundar: One of India’s Reliable Test All-Rounders

The Tamil Nadu cricketer announced himself in India’s famous Gabba victory in 2021, scoring a first-innings fifty and taking four wickets.

Since his comeback during the New Zealand series last year, Sundar has become a crucial part of India’s Test setup, particularly after Ravichandran Ashwin’s retirement. He emerged as the leading wicket-taker in the three-Test series with 16 wickets at 14.12, despite missing the opening clash in Bengaluru. The left-hander also chipped in with 89 runs in four innings at an average of 44.50. His breakthrough series performance earned him a spot ahead of Ashwin and Jadeja in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 in Perth, where he impressed, scoring 29 runs and claiming two wickets.

Recently, the Gujarat Titans player made crucial contributions in England too. He scored 284 runs and claimed seven wickets in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy as India levelled the five-match series 2-2. His heroics include an unbeaten century in the last Test at The Oval.

The all-rounder, who was not picked for the Asia Cup 2025, was signed by Hampshire for the last two rounds of the County Championship 2025, where he scored 136 runs and took four wickets.

The two-match test series between India and West Indies starts on October 2 in Ahmedabad, while the second Test is scheduled in Delhi on October 10. The hosts will start the series red-hot favourites, having not lost a Test match to the West Indies since May 2002.
