It was his fifth Test century as Indian captain.
Shubman Gill played another magnificent knock in the second Test against the West Indies in Delhi. He registered his 10th Test century, scoring 129 runs in 196 deliveries, including 16 boundaries and two maximums.
He had a set stage when he came, with India in a commendable position of 251/2 in 68.3 overs, and his knock ensured the team built on the start. While Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed early in an unfortunate run out, Gill continued his run-scoring form and brought another century this year.
This was Gill’s fifth Test century as a captain in just his 12th innings, making him the third-fastest to five Test centuries as a leader. Only Alastair Cook (9) and Sunil Gavaskar (10) took fewer innings to reach the milestone.
He surpassed Don Bradman (13) and Steve Smith (14) in this elite list. As a captain, Gill has been marvellous and has already broken numerous records in a short span.
After completing his maiden ton in his 23rd innings, Gill took 48 outings to complete his first five centuries, but he has doubled them in a span of 12 innings. He now also has the most centuries for India in the World Test Championship (WTC) history, surpassing Rohit Sharma’s tally of nine centuries.
Additionally, Gill now has the third-most centuries as a captain in WTC history, surpassing Babar Azam (4). Only England’s Joe Root (8) and Sri Lanka’s Dimuth Karunaratne (6) have more, but the former is no longer the captain, and the latter has retired.

Shubman Gill has also joined the legendary Virat Kohli in another elite list, becoming only the second Indian captain with five Test hundreds in a year. Kohli achieved this feat twice in 2017 and 2018 and hit four tons in 2016.
Earlier, Gill also became the third-fastest Indian captain to 1000 runs, achieving the feat in 17 innings. Only Sunil Gavaskar (14) and Virat Kohli (16) took fewer outings to complete the landmark.
As a captain, Gill has the second-best average (84.81), behind Don Bradman’s 101.51, with at least 10 innings. It has indeed been a remarkable start to Gill’s captaincy tenure, and he has shown no signs of pressure with this added responsibility and led a team in transition from the front.
