‘Ashwin came and apologised to me later’ – Riyan Parag opens up on the controversy surrounding his run out during IPL 2022

Riyan Parag made an interesting revelation, stating how veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin came up and apologised to him for a bad run-out during Qualifier 1 of the now-concluded IPL 2022 in Kolkata.

Parag said Ashwin was “sorry” for having sold him down the river by making no attempt to dash at the other end even as his specialist Rajasthan Royals (RR) batting partner sprinted to try and farm the strike.

The incident is from the last ball of the Royals first-innings where Ashwin missed a wide outside off-stump from Gujarat Titans (GT) seamer Yash Dayal.

Expected to take off for a quick bye to allow Parag to take strike for the extra ball, Ashwin stayed put at his end and even gestured at his partner as to why he was coming across for a single.

Call it confidence in his batting or a rare brainfade, Ashwin seemed really interested in retaining the strike, while Riyan Parag was intent on crossing ends to try and maximise the remaining ball in the innings.

Riyan Parag reveals apology from R Ashwin after their poor run-out

As it happened, Parag and Ashwin were left stranded at the same end in a funny sight for the viewers, with the Titans ensuring the Royals’ designated powerhitter was dismissed run-out.

In the heat of the battle, Ashwin perhaps didn’t realise his mistake. But the Indian stalwart recognised it after the game, offering Parag an apology for letting him down on what should’ve been a single initiated by the batter.

“Ashwin bhai was batting on the last ball and usually if there is a tailender at the other end, it makes sense for him to retain the strike. But with me there, I expected him to run for the available bye and allow me to hit the last ball,” Riyan Parag said during a ‘Rooter Stream’.

“But he didn’t run, which left me shocked. In that moment, I looked at him in disappointment and quietly left the field. Afterwards, he himself came up to me and said ‘sorry’ for the run-out, stating that he was lost in the moment thinking of something else and didn’t realise he should’ve gone ahead with the run,” he added.

Parag said the matter with his senior Indian teammate settled with their conversation and there was absolutely no need to create a “controversy” out of it.
