He is currently the top wicket-taker in the five-match T20I series against England.
Star India spinner Varun Chakravarthy has jumped a massive 25 places to enter the top 5 of the ICC T20I bowler rankings. Chakravarthy’s career-best ranking comes after his stellar fifer during the IND vs ENG 3rd T20I in Rajkot.
The 33-year-old finished with figures of 4-0-24-5 as he registered his second five-wicket haul in the shortest format.
He is currently also the top wicket-taker in the five-match T20I series against England, with 10 scalps to his name in 3 games so far.
Interestingly, he is only the third Indian bowler after Kuldeep Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar to have two five-wicket hauls in the format. Chakravarthy required only 16 innings to reach the landmark, which shows how threatening he can be.

Chakravarthy made his T20I debut in 2021 but he fell down the pecking order and lost his place following India’s underwhelming campaign in the 2022 T20 World Cup, where they failed to progress beyond the group stage. However, he managed to turnaround his fortunes when he made a strong comeback in the home series against Bangladesh in October last year. Since then, Varun has been exceptional.
Upon reestablishing himself in the national squad, Chakravarthy has delivered remarkable performances, taking 27 wickets in just 10 matches. His other fifer came during India’s tour of South Africa in November, where he produced outstanding figures of 4-0-17-5 in the second T20I at St George’s Park in Gqeberha.
Chakravarthy has evolved into a crucial cog in India’s T20 setup and will very well be in the plans for the T20 World Cup 2026. Varun, along with Kuldeep, can be a pair that can rule the coming years and help India defend the T20 World Cup next year.
