Shubman Gill became the Indian batter and captain with the highest aggregate runs in a Test match. He achieved the historic milestone on the fourth day of the ongoing second Test against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Saturday, July 5. Gill surpassed the previous best of 344 by Sunil Gavaskar against the West Indies in 1971.
The right-hand batter registered his maiden double-century in Test cricket in the first innings. He followed up with a hundred in the second innings, improving his numbers in the ongoing five-match series.

The right-hand batter came out in the middle following an early wicket of Karun Nair (26). Initially, he acted as the aggressor when KL Rahul was on the crease. After Rahul’s departure, he played the second fiddle to KL Rahul, who scored a fifty. Rishabh Pant came in at number five and played in his trademark style, taking charge of English bowlers from the word go. Meanwhile, Gill shifted gears and launched an attack, who were trying to bowl short at him and then continued to play that way. Gill and Pant ensured that the lead went past 400 by forging a quickfire 110-run stand. He then hit a six to join the 500-run club and soon completed his century.
Gill has now joined the elite list of players who have amassed an aggregate of 300+ runs in a Test match. He has just found a place, but now leads the list with a total of 369 runs across two innings, followed by Gavaskar (344 runs), VVS Laxman (340 runs), Sourav Ganguly (330 runs), and Virender Sehwag (319 & 309 runs).
The current Indian skipper now has 369 runs to his name in a Test match when the article was updated. He smashed 269 runs in the first innings and a century in the second, becoming the first Indian captain to achieve the feat in the red-ball format. The 25-year-old also matched the feat 54 years later, joining Gavaskar to score a double century and a hundred in the same Test. Gavaskar did it in 1971 against the West Indies, where the latter scored 124 and 220 runs in the first and second innings, respectively.

Meanwhile, Gill also broke Virat Kohli’s record of the highest match aggregate runs by the Indian skipper. Kohli had amassed 293 against Sri Lanka in Delhi in 2017, and he surpassed the former skipper’s tally when he scored his 25th run. Notably, Australian legend Don Bradman holds the all-time record for most runs in a series with 974 runs.
The 25-year-old also went past former skipper Kohli’s tally to become the Indian with the most runs in the debut series as captain. The 36-year-old had racked up 449 runs against Australia in 2014/15 when he took over the charge from MS Dhoni. Gill has already crossed the 500-run mark with a possible six innings across three Tests remaining in the series.
