Virat Kohli Reacts To Shubman Gill’s Record-Breaking Knocks In Edgbaston Test vs England

Former India captain Virat Kohli congratulated current India Test captain Shubman Gill on the latter’s record-breaking knocks during the ongoing second Test against England at Edgbaston.

“Well played star boy. Rewriting history. Onwards and upwards from here. You deserve all of this,” Virat Kohli wrote in an Instagram story that was uploaded on his official handle.

Shubman Gill scored 269 in the first innings of the Edgbaston Test and followed it up with a knock of 161 in the second innings. Shubman Gill also broke a notable record of Virat Kohli.

Shubman Gill’s historic feat

With 585 runs from four innings, Shubman Gill now has scored most runs by an Indian batter in his maiden series as captain of the side. Virat Kohli had scored 449 runs from four innings against Australia in Australia during the 2014-15 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.

In the first innings of the first Test in Leeds last week, the Punjab batter had registered a century. The 25-year-old scored 147 runs from 227 balls, hitting 19 fours and one six. However, Shubman Gill was dismissed for just eight runs in the second innings of the first Test. India set England a target of 371 in that match, which the hosts chased down with five wickets to spare.

Where the second Test currently stands

Coming back to the ongoing second Test, India, who posted 587 in the first innings, declared their second innings at a total of 427/6 declared. Shubman Gill was involved in century-run partnerships with Rishabh Pant (For the fourth wicket) and Ravindra Jadeja (For the fifth wicket).

England, who managed to post a total of 407 in the first innings, were eventually set a mammoth target of 608. At stumps on the fourth day, the hosts were 72/3 with Ollie Pope (24*) and Harry Brook (15*) unbeaten. India need seven more wickets to win whereas England need 536 runs to win as the second Test heads towards Sunday’s fifth and final day.
