England have been docked two points for maintaining a slow over rate during the Lord’s Test. Hence, their points on the World Test Championship (WTC) table have reduced from 24 to 22, with their points percentage decreasing from 66.67% to 61.11%.

This has been addressed under Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, which stipulates that one point is deducted for each short over, taking into account time allowances. That means the home team was two overs slow of the regulated over rates, leading to two points being deducted.
England have now slipped from second to third spot in the rankings, with Sri Lanka taking over with 66.67% points percentage. England were heavily slow while completing their overs in both innings, for they changed fields too often, resulting in more time being wasted.

This was because the game was so tense, and they had to move fielders all around to remain ahead and not give India any edge. Further, pacers bowled more overs, especially since Shaoib Bashir was injured in the first innings and speedsters had more help on the final day of the Test.
Apart from two points being docked from the standings, England players have also been fined 10% of their match fees for not completing enough overs in time. This decision was made in accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which mandates a 5% match fee deduction for each over.
England captain Ben Stokes accepted the sanction imposed by Richie Richardson, and no formal hearing was held. It was always on the cards after the team took ample time for each over, which resulted in several overs lost on each day.
83 overs were bowled on the first day, followed by 72.3 on the next. Then, on the third and fourth day, 77.2 and 78.5 overs were bowled, respectively. Then, England took more than two sessions to bowl 57.1 overs on the final day, which was again too slow.
This has been a constant theme throughout the series, for teams have not been proactive with their over-completion, wasting too much time. Unfortunately, England broke the playing conditions and were on the receiving end of a penalty, suggesting their qualification for the WTC 2027 final might take a hit.
