Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has pulled out of the County Championship 2025 due to personal reasons. He was supposed to debut for Yorkshire on Tuesday at Scarborough, but the plans have now been derailed.

Anthony McGrath, Yorkshire’s head coach, labelled this development unfortunate and disappointing because they had huge expectations from the Indian batter. However, he didn’t know the exact reason behind this move, but he hoped that everything was fine with Gaikwad.
“Unfortunately, Gaikwad’s not coming now for personal reasons. We’re not going to have him for Scarborough or for the rest of the season. So that’s disappointing. I can’t tell you anything about the reasons why, but we hope that everything is okay. We’ve literally just found out.”
While Gaikwad boasts terrific numbers in white-ball cricket, his red-ball record can still be a lot better, given his superior talent and skill sets, and this County stint would have helped him evolve as a batter. However, that won’t happen now since he will no longer take part in the competition, but the CSK skipper will hope to get back on the park as quickly as possible after recent setbacks.
The recent few months have been frustrating for Ruturaj Gaikwad, as he struggled with injuries and other issues as a cricketer. He was ruled out of IPL 2025 due to an elbow injury he sustained against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) and could only play five matches in the season.

He returned from injury after recovering and was part of the India A squad in the two-match Unofficial Test series against England Lions before the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. However, he couldn’t get any games and had to warm the bench in both matches, as other players were preferred ahead of him.
Finally, he had an opportunity to return to action with the County Championship before this news broke, days before his debut game. Gaikwad was excited to join Yorkshire, as confirmed with his statement during the announcement of the deal, so the reason must be serious enough to force him out.
He has been out of India’s all three squads and will need to grind it out in the domestic arena to press a case for his return again. Talent-wise, he is among the finest and has done well for India in limited opportunities, but things haven’t gone his way lately, and Gaikwad would hope to turn the tide around soon and return to his beast mode with the willow.
