Key Sri Lanka Player Ruled Out Just Hours Before PAK vs SL Super Four Match in Asia Cup 2025

Chandra Moulee Das

Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana has been ruled out of his team’s upcoming clash against Pakistan today (September 23) in the ongoing Asia Cup 2025. The development comes just a few hours before the start of the decisive match, with both teams facing a must-win scenario to keep themselves alive in the continental tournament. The news of the same was confirmed by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) via their official social media handles.

It is understood that the speedster has been keeping unwell and has not attended training sessions for the past two days. He is currently under medical treatment.

Pathirana has played just one game in Asia Cup 2025 out of the four matches SL have played so far. The 22-year-old featured in the tournament opener against Bangladesh where he was unimpressive, leaking 42 runs from his four overs at an economy of 10.50 and returned wicketless. He has been out of the side since.

Given his limited contribution so far, there remains speculation regarding Pathirana’s return for the Islanders in the remainder of the Asia Cup.

Who has replaced Matheesha Pathirana in the Sri Lanka Playing XI?

After using Pathirana in the first game, Sri Lanka brought in an extra spinner in Maheesh Theekshana for the next match. He was then eventually replaced by Dunith Wellalage for the next two games.

Sri Lanka has a set pace attack in Nuwan Thushara, Dushmantha Chameera and Dasun Shanaka with Wanindu Hasaranga being the frontline spinner. However, they have struggled with their fifth bowling option with Wellalage going for runs in the two games he played. They have also briefly tried Charith Asalanka and Kamindu Mendis but didn’t really work and it remains to be seen who they will be banking on to deliver in the role in the do-or-die clash against Pakistan.
