It was a wicket against the run of play.
Yashasvi Jaiswal lost his wicket in a terrible run out on the second day of the second Test in Delhi. He was batting so well and should have converted this knock into a big score, but an unfortunate action resulted in his dismissal against the run of play.
Jaiswal drove a full-length delivery to the mid-off region and went for a quick single immediately, but Shubman Gill said no, even though he took a few steps out of his crease. The batter kept running without looking at his partner, and it was too late by the time he realised his wrong call.
He turned back to return to his crease, but the throw was accurate enough for the wicketkeeper to remove the bails just in time and cut Jaiswal’s innings short. He was furious with Gill, probably reminding him that it was his call and that he was running towards the danger end.
After an extended argument and chatter with his captain, Jaiswal was asked to walk back to the pavilion by the umpires so that the game could go on. A double hundred was there for taking, and it was his mistake to try a quick single at that stage when runs were coming anyway.
Since making his Test debut against the West Indies in 2023, Yashasvi Jaiswal has always scored runs against them and continued his good run on home soil. He notched up his seventh century in just 48 innings, five of them ending with a 150+ score.

There was a period before this series when his average fell below 50, but this knock has ensured it’s right up there at a healthy 52.60. Only three more batters have hit more centuries than Jaiswal before turning 24, and he has played in more arduous conditions as an opener.
The hunger to convert centuries into big ones has been on show every time he gets his eyes in. That is one of the reasons why he was furious after the unfortunate run out because the deck doesn’t have enough demons, and he had a chance to register his third double century.
Nevertheless, he would be happy to get a big score after missing out in the first Test in Ahmedabad. Jaiswal will enter the South Africa series next month with runs on his back, where the challenges will be more arduous.
