India bundled out South Africa for 159 runs.

The hosts’ blazing pace attack has outclassed the defending World Test Championship (WTC) winners in the ongoing IND vs SA 1st Test. Mohammed Siraj also complemented India pacer Jasprit Bumrah with two crucial strikes in the 45th over to remove Kyle Verreynne and Marco Jansen.

While the Proteas wicketkeeper-batter managed 16 runs before getting trapped for an LBW, all-rounder Jansen just survived three balls as the 31-year-old knocked over his stumps with the fourth delivery of the over.

Eventually, India bundled out the visitors for 159 runs in 55 overs.

Mohammed Siraj Registered A Crucial Old-ball Comeback in IND vs SA 1st Test

Following his 10 wickets in the latest two Tests against the West Indies at home, Siraj was not at his best during his initial spell on Day 1 of the IND vs SA series-opener. While Bumrah continued to keep things tight for the South African batters, Siraj went on to concede an expensive 25 runs from the other end, including five boundaries, in his first three-over spell.

But the seamer managed to put up a brilliant comeback during his second spell of the opening day. Siraj gave away only nine runs, including a four, in his next three overs. Once the paceman gained his rhythm, he produced a lethal six-over spell with the old ball. Conceding just nine runs and a boundary, Siraj added two pivotal wickets to his tally in the final spell.

Previously, he has showcased his old-ball brilliance on numerous occasions, including the latest heroics on the fifth day of the England vs India final fixture.

Both the experienced players, Verreynne and Jansen, who have appeared in 30 and 20 red-ball matches so far, struggled to tackle the reverse swing after 40 overs.

However, the ongoing Test is the maiden fixture for both of them on Indian soil. Notably, following his first-innings duck, Jansen struck early to remove India’s formidable opener Yashasvi Jaiswal. The batter was coming on the back of a great run of form following the England and West Indies Tests and a stunning return to the Ranji Trophy 2025-26.

But a gritty 19-run partnership off 80 balls between KL Rahul and Washington Sundar has helped to stabilise the hosts’ innings. Moreover, the Proteas will miss their pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada, who missed participating in the clash due to a rib injury. Having said that, the visitors are set for an uphill battle on Day 2 as India finished the day on 37/1 with Rahul (13) and Sundar (six) unbeaten at the crease.
