How KKR Can Make a Comeback in IPL 2027 After 2026 Fiasco

After winning the title in 2024, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have not had the best of the last two seasons. They finished eighth in IPL 2025 and had another disappointing season in 2026, missing the playoffs for the second year in a row.

In the previous season they had a difficult start in the tournament as they went winless in their first six matches. They did end up winning six of their last eight matches, but it was still not enough for them to finish at the top four. There were many things that went wrong for them, not only during the season but also at the auction.

Here we look at how KKR can make a comeback in IPL 2027.

KKR need more stability at the top

With Ajinkya Rahane retiring from the IPL, KKR will need to find a new opening partner for Finn Allen. They have Tim Seifert in the squad, and he has been in good form in franchise cricket. He can be one of the options to open the innings.

However, they should also look for an Indian opening batter at the auction. Having a good Indian opener will give them more options while making the team combination easier. Rahane did not have the best of seasons in the last two years, and KKR struggled to get good starts at the top. They will need a more reliable opening pair in IPL 2027.

Add more experience to the Indian pace attack

KKR need to add more depth to their Indian pace attack. In the previous season, Harshit Rana missed the tournament because of an injury, and the team did not had many strong backup options.

They badly missed Harshit after he was ruled out. Kartik Tyagi was their best Indian pacer during the previous season, but he is still inexperienced.e, but he is still inexperienced.

Vaibhav Arora, who was one of their main Indian pacers, also had a below average season. So, KKR should look for an experienced Indian pacer at the IPL 2027 auction to strengthen their attack.

KKR need a smarter auction strategy

The IPL 2027 auction should not be about making the biggest purchase. It should be about making the right purchases. KKR have already shown that they are willing to spend big, but their recent results suggest that money alone cannot guarantee success.

Kolkata Knight Riders are a three time IPL champion franchise and have already shown how dangerous they can be when everything comes together. Now, after two straight seasons without reaching the playoffs, they need to make smart decisions.

KKR will need to find a new captain for IPL 2027. With Ajinkya Rahane no longer in the team, the franchise will have a new leader. This time, they should not make the same mistake that they did earlier.

After releasing Shreyas Iyer before the IPL 2025 auction, KKR did not have Rahane in their plans at the start. However, after he went unsold in the first two rounds, they bought him in the accelerated round and then made him the captain as he was the most experienced player and had done the captaincy before in the tournament.

KKR need a reliable overseas pacer

Three time champions Kolkata Knight Riders spent INR 18 crore on Matheesha Pathirana, but injuries kept him out for most of the season. When he finally played, he bowled only eight balls before getting injured again. This left them with fewer options in their pace attack.

KKR have some good Indian pacers, but they still lack experience. They also signed Mustafizur Rahman, but he was removed from the squad due to tensions between India and Bangladesh. KKR then added Blessing Muzarabani as his replacement, who played only two matches. They will now look for an experienced overseas pacer for IPL 2027 who can strengthen their bowling attack. One player KKR could target at the auction is Josh Tongue.

If the franchise can work on all this, they will really have a good season.
