Will Rohit Sharma Return as Captain for Mumbai Indians vs CSK in Their First IPL 2025 Game? Hardik Pandya Confirms

Hardik will return as captain for MI's next match against his former team Gujarat Titans on March 29.

At a press conference ahead of the IPL 2025 season, Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Hardik Pandya revealed who will lead the team in his absence for the opening match. He confirmed that Suryakumar Yadav, not Rohit Sharma, will captain MI in their season opener against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on March 23.

Hardik stated, “Suryakumar Yadav leads India as well. He will lead Mumbai Indians in the first match of TATA IPL 2025.”

Suryakumar last captained Mumbai Indians in IPL 2023. Filling in for Rohit, he led the team against Kolkata Knight Riders and played a crucial knock of 43 off 25 balls, guiding MI to victory at Wankhede Stadium.

Why Hardik Pandya Will Not Play Against CSK On March 23?

In Mumbai Indians’ final league match of IPL 2024 against Lucknow Super Giants, Hardik received a one-match suspension and a fine of INR 30 lakh for maintaining a slow over rate. Since this was MI’s third over-rate violation of the season, the captain faced a mandatory one-game suspension.

Hardik Pandya will return as the captain for MI’s next match. It will be played on March 29 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad against the Shubman Gill-led Gujarat Titans.

Suryakumar Yadav’s Captaincy Record For India

The then skipper, Rohit Sharma retired from T20Is following India’s 2024 T20 World Cup triumph against South Africa. Suryakumar was appointed as the national team captain for the shortest format of the game.

Since taking over, SKY has led India in the T20I series against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, South Africa, and England. He has remained unbeaten as captain. Overall, the 34-year-old has led India in 22 T20Is, winning 18 of them.
