Bumrah might not play all five games on the tour, so the management wants to appoint someone as vice-captain who will play all five matches.
According to a latest report by The Indian Express, Jasprit Bumrah won’t be the vice-captain of the Indian team on the England tour. Bumrah has previously led India in Rohit Sharma’s absence, but the BCCI has decided to relieve him from this duty to manage his workload.
Bumrah might not play all five games on the tour, so the management wants to appoint someone as vice-captain who will play all five matches. Bumrah recently suffered a back injury on the Australia tour and missed too many crucial matches, including the Champions Trophy 2025.
“We want a player who will be available for all five Test matches and he should be given the vice-captain’s role. Bumrah won’t be playing all five matches, so we don’t want to appoint different deputies for different games. It will be better that the captain and vice-captain should be certain and play all five Tests,” a BCCI source told The Indian Express.
While Jasprit Bumrah will be with the side, India won’t put him under as much pressure as on the Australia tour, which broke his back. He should get ample rest between the matches to keep himself fresh and bowl at his best, unlike the Australia tour, where he played all five games and returned with a back injury.
The BCCI wants to invest in a youngster who can be groomed as a future captain rather than opting for a short-term solution. That means the future planning to find a successor for Rohit Sharma starts with this England tour.

Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant, who are 25 and 27, respectively, fit in this category. Other Test batters like Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, and KL Rahul are in their mid or late 30s, so they might not be wise options for the leadership role.
Further, Yashasvi Jaiswal is too young to take such a big responsibility, and the team might want him to focus on his batting first. Once he establishes himself in the team and gains more experience, Jaiswal will certainly be in the leadership group in Tests.
It will be interesting to see who becomes the vice-captain, and the player who becomes Rohit’s deputy in this series will likely be the next Test captain. Unfortunately, the options are limited, and India must be prudent with their selection before making a final call.
