Unsold in IPL 2025 Auction, Prithvi Shaw Now Set to Cut Ties With Mumbai Cricket to Pursue Career Elsewhere

He did not play in IPL 2025.

Earlier today, Mumbai opener Prithvi Shaw demanded a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) on the grounds of representing another State in domestic cricket. This decision came after the Mumbai senior selection committee left Shaw out of the Ranji Trophy last year. They stated concerns over his fitness, and MCA trainers put him on a two-week fitness regimen.

“He has sought NOC from us and we will take decision on it soon,” a source in the MCA confirmed to The Indian Express.

As of today evening, Shaw was granted the NOC.

Additionally, Arman Jaffer and Sidhant Adatrao are also leaving the association. They are set to represent Pondicherry in the upcoming season. They will be joined by Puneet Datey, who makes his move from Madhya Pradesh.

Why Prithvi Shaw has decided to part ways with Mumbai

Earlier, the team management had informed the MCA that Shaw had a body fat percentage of 35 and required intensive training before being considered for a return to the squad. He was also asked to lose some weight before being available for selection. However, due to a failure to improve fitness, the 25-year-old was also dropped from the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024 in December. Notably, the opener received offers from three other States earlier this month, motivating his decision to leave MCA.

“At this juncture in my career, I have been presented with a promising opportunity to play professional cricket under another State Association, which I believe will further contribute to my growth and development as a cricketer. In light of this, I kindly request you to issue me a No Objection Certificate (NOC) that will enable me to officially represent the new State Association in the upcoming domestic season,” wrote Shaw in an email to MCA.

In an email, he also expressed his sincere gratitude for the valuable opportunities provided by the MCA. He thanked the association for their unwavering support he had received during his time.

Let Down by Delhi Capitals ahead of IPL 2025

Since his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut in 2018, Shaw was part of the Delhi Capitals outfit. His last two editions, in 2023 and 2024, were abysmal as he averaged 13.25 and 24.75, respectively. In both seasons, he played in only eight games. While he occasionally gave good starts with a high score of 50+, he couldn’t cement his position in the team. Eventually, the team did not retain Shaw or acquire his services back during the IPL 2025 mega auction.

Shaw made his India Test debut in 2018, but it lasted only five games. In limited overs, he has played six ODIs and one T20I match.

During his last Ranji Trophy fixture in 2024, the opener made one run.

Coming to his List A appearances, Shaw was last seen in India’s Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2022. However, he played in England’s One Day Cup for Northamptonshire in 2024. During that stint, he made 343 runs in eight innings with a top score of 97.
