3 IPL Franchises Who Could Pick Mohammad Amir at IPL 2027 Auction
Pakistani players have not been allowed to play in the IPL since 2008. However, there is a chance of seeing one in the IPL 2027 auction, with Mohammad Amir being a possible name in the auction list.
The pacer retired from international cricket in 2024. Amir obtained a UK passport through his wife, which allows him to play as a domestic or local player in English competitions like the T20 Blast and The Hundred. Previously, Azhar Mahmood played in the IPL in 2012, 2013 and 2015 after obtaining a British passport.
Amir recently confirmed on the Wisden Scoop podcast that even in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), he will now be considered a foreign player and not a local player. He is now technically eligible to play in the IPL, but he has not yet confirmed whether he will take part or register for the IPL auction.
If he registers his name, here are three teams that could look to target Mohammad Amir at the IPL 2027 auction.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)
The two time defending champions will be looking to strengthen their overseas pace attack for the upcoming season. If available, Mohammad Amir could be a target for RCB.
With the ODI World Cup 2027 coming up, there have been reports that Josh Hazlewood could miss the next season as Australia may look to manage his workload. Australia also have a busy schedule across all three formats, and Hazlewood could be given a break.
This could leave RCB with Jacob Duffy and Nuwan Thushara as their other overseas pace options. Thushara also missed the entire season due to injury. So, RCB will need to make some changes at the IPL 2027 auction and could look to buy an overseas pacer. With Yash Dayal’s future still doubtful, Amir will also add a left-arm angle that RCB missed in the previous season.
There will be other enticing names like Josh Tongue whom RCB could target, but Amir could also be a good option.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)
SRH could be one of the teams looking to target Mohammad Amir at the IPL 2027 auction if he registers for it. They already have a few overseas pacers, including Pat Cummins and Eshan Malinga. However, Brydon Carse and David Payne were ruled out due to injuries, and SRH had to bring in Gerald Coetzee and Dilshan Madushanka as replacements.
Keeping this in mind, SRH could look to have another good option in their bowling attack, and Amir could be one of them. Also, because of the World Cup 2027 Australia might be keen to manage Pat Cummins’ workload, and it could open up a spot.
Sri Lanka might also be tempted to manage Eshan Malinga’s workload, especially after they had several injury issues before the T20 World Cup 2026. Amir no longer plays international cricket, so if he is picked, he could be available for the full season. Besides, SRH have already attracted attention by picking a Pakistani player in The Hundred, when they picked Usman Tariq for Sunrisers Leeds amidst huge uproar, which eventually died down after his performances.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)
The three time champions will also be looking to target Mohammad Amir at the IPL 2027 auction. In the last auction, they bought left arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman but had to release him later because of the political tensions between India and Bangladesh. So, Amir could be a like for like replacement for him.
KKR also had Matheesha Pathirana, but his availability was cut short due to injury and fitness issues. KKR still do not know if he will be available for the next season. Blessing Muzarabani played only two matches for KKR last season.
As a result, Cameron Green was the only overseas pacer who regularly featured in the playing XI, and KKR had one of the weakest bowling attacks in the tournament. To improve their attack, Amir could be a good option for them.
