Thieves Attack NZ vs ENG 1st Test, Steals Cameras From Hagley Oval

The cameras were among several items taken from a locked area.

The ongoing NZ vs ENG 1st Test witnessed a shocking incident after it was marred by thieves breaking in and stealing cameras from the Hagley Oval.

The news was confirmed by UK broadcaster TalkSport on their social media handle on X (formerly Twitter) that two of their cameras were stolen, which meant that they would not be able to provide images of Day 3 of the Test match on their YouTube channels.

The company which owns the venue, Venues Ōtautahi, also confirmed the development of a security breach and that the cameras were among several items taken from a locked area.

Venues Ōtautahi chief executive, Caroline Harvie-Teare said after the incident, “Some of the things we are aware of are some Venues Ōtautahi technology equipment like laptops, we’ve had a TV taken from one of the corporate areas, we’ve had alcohol taken, we’ve had some food taken, and we are just working through that full list with police on that.”

Police authorities have started investigation

Harvie-Teare have expressed disappointment over the break-in during the NZ vs ENG series opener despite the site being monitored by 24/7 security.

She mentioned that extensive CCTV footage of the incident was being reviewed by the police authorities and that Venues Ōtautahi was actively investigating the matter to determine what occurred and how to prevent future breaches.

Harvie-Teare further added that the immediate priority was to enhance security measures for the coming days and ensure New Zealand Cricket (NZC), both teams and the media were satisfied with the updated arrangements.

New Zealand Cricket also stated that they are doing their bit and collaborating with the relevant authorities to prevent similar incidents in the future.

After the first Test in Hagley Oval, the teams will lock horns in two more games, with the second game at Basin Reserve, starting on December 6 and the final game at Seddon Park from December 14.
