Ahead of IPL 2025, Mahela Jayawardene has provided an update on Jasprit Bumrah, who has been out of action due to a back injury. Bumrah sustained this injury during a gruelling Australia tour, where his workload was significantly high.
Since then, he has been out of action and missed important events like the England series and the Champions Trophy 2025. In the pre-season press conference, Jayawardene revealed that Bumrah is currently at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and is progressing well.
“He (Bumrah) is still at the NCA and is being monitored on a day-to-day basis. He is recovering and is in good spirits, hopefully, he can join the team sooner.”
Bumrah was already confirmed to be out for the whole of March, meaning he will at least miss three starting games of the season. He will join the MI squad only if he is 100% fit because the Indian team management won’t risk him ahead of a big England tour scheduled right after the IPL.
It’s never easy to find alternatives for any team when one of the lead pacers is absent, and when the player is Jasprit Bumrah, that void is impossible to fill. Mumbai Indians will miss his services because he is a runaway match-winner who can bowl in any phase, irrespective of the match situation.

MI don’t have many proven Indian speedsters outside the main XI, so their task will be more arduous. They have Satyanarayana Raju, who is a promising young speedster, but he hasn’t played at this level yet.
Other options include Arjun Tendulkar, who can concede plenty outside the powerplay overs, and Ashwani Kumar, who is again inexperienced and can be expensive on flat IPL decks. This clears that MI will have a feeble bowling attack in the initial phase.
They hope Bumrah regains his fitness as early as possible and returns to the MI setup to bolster an otherwise shaky bowling lineup. Like last season, IPL 2025 is also expected to be high-scoring with batting-friendly decks, and Bumrah’s absence can hurt MI badly.
