Recently, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin exposed the franchise for paying extra money to secure the services of Proteas youngster Dewald Brevis midway during the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) season as an injury replacement for Gurjapneet Singh. While Brevis’ official signing amount was INR 2.2 crores, Ashwin highlighted that the South African decided to join CSK despite offers from other teams since the five-time champions were willing to pay extra money. While the revelation stirred quite a sensation, CSK has now put out an official statement refuting any such claims.

In the statement, CSK clarified that the deal was negotiated in compliance with all the IPL rules.
The CSK statement read, “Chennai Super Kings categorically clarifies that all actions taken by the franchise during the signing process of Dewald Brevis as a Replacement Player during TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 were in complete compliance with the rules and regulations of IPL.”

In his first two IPL seasons (2022 and 2024), the 22-year-old played for the Mumbai Indians but didn’t really capitalise on the opportunities and subsequently went unsold at last year’s mega-auction. However, after donning the Yellow jersey, Brevis looked fabulous scoring 225 runs in six games at an impressive average of 37.50 while hitting at a blistering rate of 180. The youngster ended up being the solution to CSK’s finishing problems, although by then CSK was almost out of contention for a playoffs spot and the eventually finished the season at the bottom of the table with only four wins from 14 outings.
