Mithali Raj is now the first Indian women’s batter to score 10,000 international runs.

She was dismissed off the next ball and fell short of another great milestone. Mithali Raj is now 26 runs away from becoming the first women’s batter to get 7,000 ODI runs. Former England cricketer Charlotte Edwards is Raj’s distant second with 5,992 ODI runs to his name.

Edwards is the other women’s batter to score 10,000 international runs. She made 10,273 runs across formats in a career spanning two decades from 1996 to 2016.

The milestone is a testament to Mithali Raj’s longevity as she began her India career in 1999 and has been around since. She has played 10 Tests, 212 ODIs and 89 T20Is for the country.

Raj averages 51.00 in Tests with 663 runs and 50.53 in ODIs with 6,794, besides 2364 runs at 37.52 in T20Is.

The 38-year-old will be hoping to continue in the same vein and help India win the next year’s ODI World Cup, potentially her last international assignment.

Teammate Smriti Mandhana was all praise for Mithali Raj when she spoke of her 10,000 milestone ahead of the third one-dayer against South Africa.

“Getting to 10,000 runs first or second is a huge thing,” Mandhana said. “She is the first Indian to do that, so I think it is something that shows how consistent she has been throughout her career. We have looked up to her, definitely a very proud feeling for all of us in the team.”
