Australia and South Africa are tied 1-1 in the T20I series
Australia’s middle-order batter Mitchell Owen was absent from the playing XI for the third and final T20I against South Africa at the Cazaly’s Stadium in Cairns on Saturday.
The 23-year-old suffered a concussion on Tuesday after being hit on the helmet by a Kagiso Rabada delivery during the second T20I at Cairns.
Even though he seemed fine after on-field assessment, Owen showed delayed concussion symptoms after the match which means he will be sidelined for a mandatory period of 12 days according to protocol.

The hosts also picked Josh Inglis for Alex Carey alongside left-arm pacer Nathan Ellis for the series decider. Inglis was left out of the second T20I as he was suffering with flu.
Following his exploits in the Big Bash League 2024-25, where he scored a record-equalling hundred in the final against Sydney Thunder, Owen was handed his T20I debut against West Indies in the first T20I at Kingston.
The all-rounder made a match-winning contribution in his first international game as he scored 50 off 27 balls and claimed 1-14 with the ball. Owen scored 36 not out in the third T20I and 37 in the fifth T20I as Australia swept the series 5-0.
Against South Africa, Owen batted in the lower-middle order and registered scores of 2 and 8. Australia have already announced his replacement for the ODI squad by bringing in Cooper Connelly.
Australia won the first T20I after Tim David produced a superb knock of 82 off 53 balls which was supported by Cameron Green’s 35 off 13 balls. In reply, the Proteas could only manage 161/9 in 20 overs and lost by 17 runs.
The second game went the visitors’ way after Dewald Brevis smashed a record-breaking 125 not out off 56 balls that took them to 218/7 in 20 overs. In reply, Australia were all out for 165 in 17.4 overs.
This is also the first time Cairns is hosting a T20I game much like Darwin hosting the first two matches of this series.
