The former England captain also became Starc's 100th Ashes wicket.
The visitors are off to a poor start in the highly anticipated Ashes 2025 opener. The veteran Australian pacer, Mitchell Starc, has wreaked havoc to reduce England to 39/3 under nine overs. His latest strike has dismissed the former England skipper Joe Root for a seven-ball duck.
Watch the dismissal here:
Earlier, fans and former England players had predicted Root to notch up his maiden ton on Australian soil during the Ashes 2025. But this unwanted start to the series has extended his average run in Australia after enjoying a smashing form against India at home.
Root’s dismissal has been registered as a milestone wicket for the Australian talisman as the batter became Starc’s 100th Ashes scalp. Previously, the 35-year-old also struck England with two early blows. Following his first-over strike to send back Zak Crawley for a six-ball duck, Starc also dismissed his opening partner Ben Duckett (21).
With two pillars of the Australian pace-trio, skipper Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, ruled out of the first Test, the hosts were expected to heavily rely on the fierce Mitchell Starc spells. However, the seamer has also lived up to the fans’ expectations as usual, delivering three consecutive breakthroughs.

The visitors have entered the prestigious red-ball series on the back of an abysmal record. Earlier, the Baggy Greens had clean-swept them in the latest three Ashes series. They are yet to register a single Test victory down under since 2010-2011.
Moreover, before travelling to Australia, England had failed to win the five-match series on their home soil against India. This has placed them sixth on the World Test Championship (WTC) points table among eight participating nations. On the other hand, the hosts are currently seated at the top after claiming a 0-3 whitewash in the West Indies.
In the absence of Cummins and Hazlewood, the series opener provides the best chance for Ben Stokes and Co. to clinch an early series lead. But considering the aforementioned stats, a defeat would make it harder for the visitors to bounce back in the remaining four clashes, with the key pacers also set to return in the second Ashes 2025 Test in Brisbane.
However, at the time of writing, England are at 105/4 after 23 overs, with Harry Brook (28) and captain Stokes (4) at the crease.
