Bangladesh created history on Wednesday morning, rolling New Zealand over for 169 and setting themselves up to chase just 40 runs in the final innings at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui in the first Test of the two-match series.
For a side that has only won five away Test matches in its history (and first outside Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and West Indies), this is a phenomenal result and arguably one of the biggest upsets in the history of Test cricket. This was a No.9 ranked ICC Test side beating a No.2 ranked ICC Test side (and current World Test Championship champions) in an away Test match. Few wins in the history of Test cricket can be labelled a bigger upset.
For New Zealand, it brings an end to their eight-series winning run at home since 2017. They last lost a Test match at home in 2017! An Asian team (Pakistan) last beat them at home in 2011. There have only been six wins for Asian teams in New Zealand prior to this in the 21st century.
The magnitude of Bangladesh’s win cannot be overstated and the reactions on social media also suggest fans are well and truly aware of the historic moment created by the Tigers in New Zealand in the first NZ v BAN Test.
Bring Bangladesh over to play the Ashes instead of England, @CricketAus.#Ashes #NZvBAN #NZvsBAN

What a way to start the year for bangladesh cricket. Big congratulations to the captain, players and coaching stuff.

Before this Test, 6 out of New Zealand’s last 10 Tests at home have been innings wins. And 6 out of Bangladesh’s last 10 away Tests were innings defeats.#NZvBAN

Just 40 runs away. Red-letter day for Bangladesh cricket.

60 WTC points for Bangladesh.
India only have 53
— Bangladennish (@DennisCricket_) January 5, 2022
Never mind England being an absolute shower in Australia – Bangladesh have just knocked over NZ, the reigning WTC champions, in their own back yard!
Test cricket, you complete and utter rascal #NZvBan

For me personally, this Test win brings a strange emotion. I was in Christchurch in 2019 when the Test match got cancelled due to the Al Noor Mosque shooting.
To see them win their next Test in New Zealand, is personally a special occasion. #NZvBAN

Need a scale for recent Test upsets:
You’re joking, right? (Durban 2019)
Get out of here (Gabba 2021)
Are you out of your mind? (Mt Maunganui, 2022)— Siddhartha Vaidyanathan (@sidvee) January 5, 2022
Play has been delayed by half an hour at the SCG so we can all watch Bangladesh’s march to a historic Test victory over New Zealand. Great gesture from Cricket Australia.

Bangladesh! WOW
Just woke up and expected #NZvBAN to last until the second session at least. This has to be one of the biggest test upsets in a long time. No Shakib either…#Cricket

Given the fundamentals – 200 million population, cricket as the national sport and now probably the most investment in cricket beyond the big 3 – Bangladesh’s underperformance has always been baffling. This win could be the start of something – though that’s been said before

9 wickets fell to pace by Bangladesh
Just the fourth time they have taken 9 in an Innings, the last case was in 2005.The lowest 4th Innings target successfully defended was 85 in 1882. Only three times has a team been bowled out for 39 or less in the 4th Innings.

I reckon even Mushfiqur Rahim could celebrate now and not jinx it… #NZvBan

An understrength Bangladesh beating New Zealand – world Test champions, unbeaten in 17 Tests at home, winning 8 of those by an innings – in New Zealand will be one of the great Test match upsets
— Tim Wigmore (@timwig) January 4, 2022
In a test match where 4 seamers in this test match currently sit in the top 20 ICC test bowler rankings all from NZ, it is Ebadot Hossain who has shone through and bowled his team into a mesmerizing position about to create history.

Yeah.. might as well leave. You don’t want to be a part of this history, do you?

Can never take New Zealand seriously again.
We beat this Bangladesh team with a world record chase in Asia.

I would’ve personally paid for Athar Ali Khan’s plane ticket to get him over to NZ last night to call the winning runs here – missed opportunity

Bangladesh effortlessly bossing the world Test champions is the best possible start to 2022. #NZvBAN

Let’s talk about 𝗦𝗜𝗫 baby!
Ebadot Hossain with another but that is a stunning grab from Shoriful Islam

Who’s kiwi commentator who said “Conditions’ve played into Bangladesh’s hands. It’s been absolutely hot”. That’s such a poor comment. For World Test Champion playing a bottom rung team, you’re supposed to win anywhere! Wasn’t Richardson or McCullum. May be Grant Elliot. #NZvBAN

The ominous Ebadot salute has been given! Virat Kohli hasn’t scored a century after getting a salute from Ebadot two years back. Babar Azam too. God bless Conway!#NZvBAN pic.twitter.com/kETu5X570g

A bloke with a Test bowling average of 81.54 singlehandedly dismantling the world Test champions on their home turf is proof 2022 is going to be just as weird as 2021 #NZvBAN
— Louis Cameron (@LouisDBCameron) January 4, 2022
Yeah but Bangladesh have larger population. #NZvBAN
— Mazakiya ShortLeg (@MShortleg) January 4, 2022
I think Bangladesh should bask in their glory and literally spend all day getting these 40 runs. #NZvBAN
— higginpop (@Simon_Higgins) January 4, 2022
No one told Bangladesh that test cricket is dead, thankfully.
— Joe Miller (@JoeMillerJr) January 4, 2022
Bangladesh! Go you good things! This sure is something! What a fight! A ripper of a match. So so good to see! Have loved every minute of it! #NZvBAN

If NZ blame the pitch even a little bit (oh not enough grass, suited Bangladesh more) or the weather (oh why so hot, it made pitch so dry, and suited Bangladesh more) then this will be absolutely disrespectful to Bangladesh. Just admit you were out played.

This was Bangladesh’s first win over New Zealand in New Zealand in any format and it could not have been better. The world champions, basking in an exceptional home record in the last four years were given a rude reality Test as Bangladesh bossed them across all five days to force a sensational result. If this isn’t the biggest upset you’ve seen in your lifetime in Test cricket, you’re definitely old.
