Lancashire and Yorkshire, the two traditional rivals in English domestic cricket played out a last-ball thriller in T20 Blast 2022 - their second of the season - at Headingley on Wednesday.
The Roses rivalry lived up to its reputation once again at the T20 Blast 2022, with the Reds securing a thrilling four-run win in their second duel of the competition at Headingley on Wednesday, June 8.
Yorkshire needed 17 to win off the final over, with their No.8 and No.9 – Dominic Drakes and Matthew Revis – up against right-arm medium Danny Lamb. Brevis struck two doubles and a six off the first three balls, and a single, a wide and a dot followed to bring the equation down 5 off the last ball.
Lamb fired a full ball from round the wicket wide outside off, which would’ve perhaps passed through outside off the tramline. However, Drakes instinctively went for a hard slash and a decent connection saw it sailing towards the deep backward point region. Left-arm spinner Tom Hartley, who had bagged two wickets earlier in the innings, judged the trajectory to perfection and held onto a match-winning catch just within the playing field. The catch was sent upstairs for a referral and third umpire Sue Redfern had no difficulty in making the call.

Earlier, it was Tim David’s brisk 32-ball 66, studded with four fours and six sixes, that fuelled the visitors to a first-innings total of 213/5 after being put in to bat. Keaton Jennings (42 off 28), Steven Croft (41 off 24) and skipper Dane Vilas (40* off 20) were the other key contributors.
Adam Lyth (38 off 19) and Tom Kohler-Cadmore (77 off 43) set Yorkshire’s run-chase going to place them at 124/1 halfway through the 10th over, after Dawid Malan had been sent back by Liam Livingstone for a golden duck in the first over. Skipper David Willey struck 52 off 28, but lack of support after Kohler-Cadmore’s wicket helped Lancashire crawl their way back, before Revis’ last over brief blitz revived hopes.
The two North Group teams had earlier played a thrilling tie at Old Trafford, Manchester – an outcome decided after a controversial last-ball leg-before call.
Lancashire currently top the North Group points table with six wins and a tie from seven games, while Yorkshire are at fourth with three wins and as many defeats.
